About “Prepare the Way” Walter Scott, an early frontier Disciples evangelist, taught that there are five things you must embrace to become a Christian:
- faith
- repentance
- baptism
- forgiveness
- the Holy Spirit
To help young people understand these five elements, he used the “Five-Finger Exercise.”
Prepare the Way uses Scott’s exercise to help pastors and congregations work together in preparing older children and youth for baptism and church membership in the Christian Church (Disciples of Christ).
Prepare the Way is the versatile resource that Disciples all over the United States and Canada told CBP they wanted. A series of phone, mail, and Internet surveys gave us excellent input—and put us in touch with a group of Kansas pastors who already had the beginnings of a project in the works. With cooperation, expansion, and adaptation to a wider audience, that “grassroots” project grew into Prepare the Way.
Prepare the Way includes:
- a six-unit (six-to-twelve session) membership class plus a “lock-in.”
- a twelve-session mentoring program called “Faith Partners” to help adults in the congregation guide young people on their journey of faith.
This Faith Partner’s Guide is a book for one friend to use with another. An adult Christian and a young person preparing for baptism and church membership will each use a copy of this guide for a shared spiritual journey. You will learn together and learn from each other what it means to be a Christian.
