 Transforming Communities: Bonus Chapter

When there’s so much conflict around the country and around the corner, it’s easy to feel discouraged, overwhelmed, and helpless. What can one person to do make a difference, really?

Take heart and be inspired by real stories of ordinary people who did extraordinary things by joining together with others to heal their communities. From recovery cafes, to urban gardens, to restorative justice programs, transformative, substantive change is happening in neighborhoods all over the country, by people just like you.

In this bonus chapter by the author of Transforming Communities: How People Like You are Healing Their Neighborhoods, you’ll read the remarkable story of how an unlikely community was healed and transformed in one of the most unexpected places – a prison.

Sandhya Rani Jha serves as founder and director of the Oakland Peace Center, a collective of 40 organizations creating access, equity and dignity for all in Oakland and the Bay Area. Raised in an interracial and multi-faith family and witness to the sometimes subtle (and sometimes obvious) ways that racism and xenophobia show up in our society, it is not surprising that Sandhya’s career has been marked by work to effect public policy change, religious liberty, and an alternative voice to the religious right, and around the issues of housing for all and Dr. Martin Luther King, Jr.’s vision of Beloved Community.
