HOOGLAND, MARVIN P.

Always deeply interested in theological questions, always questioning, Marvin Hoogland early on earned the ire of conservative church leaders in his denomination by daring to challenge the proper use of the word "infallibility" in relation to the Bible. After graduating from Calvin College and Seminary and subsequently earning a doctoral degree in theology, he began his career life as a pastor, first to a large rural congregation, then to a university community.

A midlife career change to full time pastoral counseling might have put theological questions on the "back burner." However, "old theological issues took on new meanings," he writes, "in light of painful human experience" as encountered in the lives of his counselees.
